Cutting Quilting Fabric Is Half The Fun

quilting fabricStarting with a bunch of different shaped pieces of fabric and creating them into one large work of art is what quilting is all about. Cutting these quilting fabrics is half the fun. Picking your fabric, deciding on the design and cutting them out is not only fun but the beginning and very important part of the whole process.

Here's how you start; use a template to mark your fabric for quilting and then cut around each piece with your sharp fabric scissors. You will also find that it is pretty easy and fast to cut your fabric using a rotary cutter. The tool looks like a pizza cutter and has to be used with a self-healing mat and a see-through ruler. For more step-by-step instructions and tips on cutting fabrics go to home.howstuffworks.com/cutting-fabric-for-quilts.

Machine Quilting Basics

machine quiltingMany quilters prefer machine quilting so that they can quilt those tops that seem to go together faster and quicker. Machine quilting can also be a form of self expression for many. With machine quilting it can vary between an almost invisible stitch that will outline the quilt blocks or being able to combine threads and stitches that will allow you to make your one of a kind work of art that is your form of self expression. With machine quilting there is machine guided or free motion. Machine guided is for straight or curved lines while free motion is for all other patterns and designs. With practice anyone can master machine quilting and they will probably love it more.

Huntley Residents Put Quilting Techniques To Good Use

quilting techniquesThere is a group of ladies that are putting their quilting techniques and skills to good use by making quilts for kids in need in Afghanistan. This is an ongoing project, done with love, by the ladies at the Sun City Prairie Lodge. They gather in the club's sewing room to create their projects that are made with donated scraps of fabric. The finished quilts are then being sent to US troops for distribution. They have made more than 100 quilts so far. We are sure the children of Afghanistan are appreciating the ladies efforts. Mary Lou Harp, a quilter, has made up this phrase that fits perfectly, "Peace through quilts...not war." We agree. This is a great project that proves the generosity of many Americans.
